Parent Teacher Letter
Hi Parents!
Welcome to the learning adventure, The History Behind The Holidays! I hope you and your child are very excited about this learning experience and have fun with the activities! This learning adventure is targeted to the elementary school age and covers the history of the holidays in the fall and winter.
My goal is for students to question why we have holidays. Specifically, this learning adventure is meant to encourage the students to think past the name of the holiday and see the greater meaning. The activities provided in the above tabs are to create a fun, educational experience for your student. The Learn! section contains many links and videos that are easily accessible to the students. The Activities! section may require parental guidance if you choose the technology activity. If you choose the other activity, make sure your child has a partner for the project and if not, this part can be omitted or you can play the role of the partner. Each activity and the entire Learning Adventure is child friendly and should be a fun experience for you and your child!
The following materials will be needed in the activities given throughout the learning adventure:
1. Writing Utensil (Pen or Pencil)
2. Printer
3. Access to the Internet
There are different options for the activities based on which materials you have and each activity can be changed slightly to fit your student's needs best.
Here are some additional books that may enhance your child's learning experience. They are not required for the learning adventure or activities, just a helpful resource!
1. The American Story: 100 True Tales from American History is a great book if you child would like to learn more about history, specifically in America. This book is a great resource and also fun to read!
2. Kids Around the World Celebrate! is an awesome read if your student is curious about learning more about other countries holidays. This book explains what holidays other countries celebrate and why! It is a great book to compare with the holidays your child has learned about the United States.
3. Celebration: The Story of American Holidays covers all the holidays in the United States and will be great for your child if they are interested in learning about more holidays than those in the fall and winter. It is targeted towards elementary school students, so it is definitely child-friendly for your child's age!
This learning adventure exhibits specific concepts from the Georgia Performance Standards. Your student will fulfill the following standards when completing this learning adventure:
Good luck to you, parents, and your child! I hope this Learning Adventure is educational and fun for everyone! Best of luck and happy holidays!
Sincerely,
Kate McCormick
